The shortlist above is not exhaustive. Here's what we deliberately left off for Spain:
Spain runs one of the most tightly regulated online-betting regimes in Europe, and understanding that regime is more important here than in most markets because it shapes everything you'll encounter as a bettor. The Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), part of the Ministerio de Consumo, licenses every operator that legally advertises to Spanish players. Registering with a licensed operator requires ID verification against the national DNI/NIE database at signup, and mandatory documentary KYC before your first withdrawal. Advertising is severely restricted by Real Decreto 958/2020: no celebrity endorsements, no TV or radio ads outside 1am–5am, no welcome-bonus promotion to new customers. The country's shared self-exclusion register, RGIAJ, blocks registered users at every DGOJ-licensed sportsbook and every physical casino simultaneously. This shortlist reflects that reality — every operator holds a current DGOJ licence and has been checked over a real deposit-and-withdraw cycle in the last month.
A legitimate Spanish sportsbook displays its DGOJ licence number in the site footer along with a link to its record on the DGOJ public register at ordenacionjuego.es. The two most common licence types are Apuestas Deportivas Mutuas (AMU) and Apuestas Deportivas de Contrapartida (AC) — the AC licence is what most fixed-odds sportsbooks operate under. If the only licence shown is Malta (MGA), Curaçao or Gibraltar, that operator is not authorised for Spanish residents and any advertising directed at them is illegal under Real Decreto 958/2020.
Spain does not withhold tax on player winnings at licensed operators. Instead, gambling winnings are declared in your annual IRPF (personal income tax) return as ganancias patrimoniales. The tax treatment has a genuinely player-friendly feature: within the same tax year and at the same operator, you can offset losses against winnings. This is uncommon in Europe — most jurisdictions tax gross winnings without allowing losses to be deducted. Your operator sends an annual summary of your net position directly to the Agencia Tributaria, so you don't need to keep manual records of bet slips. In practice, most casual bettors end up with a net loss at year-end and no tax to pay. Serious bettors with net-positive years will pay IRPF at their marginal rate on the net.
The Spanish payment stack is dominated by Bizum, and every DGOJ-licensed operator supports it:
Crypto is not a legally recognised payment method at DGOJ-licensed operators. Skrill and Neteller are legal but less commonly integrated. Withdrawal times: fastest via Bizum (instant) and PayPal (same-day); SEPA runs 1–3 banking days.
Spanish bettors are spoiled for choice, and the sportsbooks on this list are graded on how well they cover both La Liga and international marquee events:
The Registro General de Interdicciones de Acceso al Juego (RGIAJ) is Spain's shared self-exclusion register — one of the most comprehensive in Europe. Registering at RGIAJ blocks you simultaneously from every DGOJ-licensed online sportsbook, every physical casino in Spain, and prevents licensed operators from marketing to you. Registration is free, available through the DGOJ portal at ordenacionjuego.es or through any licensed operator's site, and runs for a minimum of six months up to indefinite. Every licensed operator additionally offers per-account deposit limits, session limits and cool-off periods. Under Real Decreto 958/2020, operators are legally required to check RGIAJ status at every login attempt.
The DGOJ runs jugarbien.es, a plain-language portal covering warning signs, the tools available at every operator, and the RGIAJ registration process. FEJAR (Federación Española de Jugadores de Azar Rehabilitados) coordinates around 40 regional self-help associations across Spain and lists local phone numbers on fejar.org — the largest network of face-to-face support anywhere in Europe. Jugadores Anónimos España (jugadoresanonimos.org) runs weekly in-person meetings in most autonomous communities plus phone and online meetings. If someone else's gambling is affecting you, Ju-Al (ju-al.org) offers dedicated support. All of these services are confidential and free of charge.
Each operator is scored across four weighted criteria — payments and cash-out speed (30%), licensing and consumer protection (25%), bonus value net of terms (25%), and support and product quality (20%). Scoring is refreshed monthly against a real Spanish-verified account running a full deposit-play-withdraw cycle. We only feature DGOJ-licensed operators, and every affiliate link is clearly marked. The full methodology is at the top of the page.
