The parachute three: money meets the trapdoor

West Ham, Wolves and Burnley arrive with the two things that usually decide this division: budget and Premier League experience. West Ham are the standout — a squad valued far beyond anything else at this level, and the obvious benchmark. Wolves, if they resist the summer fire-sale, have the individual quality to blow teams away. Burnley barely need an introduction to promotion: they have done this dance before and rarely get it wrong.

Up from League One come three very different stories. Lincoln City are back in the second tier for the first time in 65 years. Cardiff City bounced straight back at the first attempt. Bolton Wanderers return after a seven-year absence. Opening weekend: three matches that set the tone

Wolves get the season underway on Friday night at home to Blackburn — the first look at whether a relegated giant is ready to boss this league or wobble under the weight of expectation.

Then the pick of the round: two of the promotion favourites collide as Burnley host West Ham, a genuine early yardstick between the money and the know-how.

And Monday night belongs to the box-office tie — promoted Cardiff welcome Wrexham for a South Wales/Hollywood clash that will draw eyes far beyond the Championship.
